Experience of oncology nurses with cancer survivors during transition from acute oncology treatment to primary care

Background: Cancer care for Canadian cancer survivors remains fragmented. Little is known about the experience of oncology nurses providing survivors, as they transition from acute treatment to primary care. Objectives: This study aimed (1) explore dealing with fragmented in survivorship; (2) identify nurses’ perspectives what promotes or inhibits their delivery quality care; and (3) obtain suggestions improve Design: used a phenomenological design caring during survivorship examine how nurse participants describe experience. Semi-structured interviews were collect data an interpretative analysis approach was develop themes data. Results: Three participated this study. The following five emerged: Under personal transition: nursing assessment, symptoms management, patient education, resources offered, refusing label promoting adjustment new normal life, return work, recognizing meaning survivor’s self-care communication, maximal recovery body functions; nurse’s positive care: knowledge, advocate survivors; (4) barriers that negatively affected low socioeconomic status (especially income), cultures languages barriers, limited time (5) Suggestions establishing position – nurse, increasing number healthcare professionals, improving skills, Conclusion: Oncology knowledge provide good foundation contribute health wellbeing survivors.
